Clip&Pin gets an update: a shortcut for each pin, and an on-the-fly preview

Since I explained why I built Clip&Pin , the app has grown following the same starting principle: stay out of the way until needed, and be as fast as possible when needed. The latest two new features are a step in this direction.

A shortcut for every pin

Until now, to reuse a pinned item, you still had to open the Quick Paste menu or popup and find it in the list. Now you can skip that step: each pin can have its own global shortcut, which copies it to the clipboard from any application, without going through the menu.

• It assigns itself. As soon as you pin an item, a combination is immediately reserved for it—a configurable modifier (default ⌘) plus a digit from 0 to 9. You have up to ten "quick" pins without lifting a finger.
• You can customize it whenever you want. You can replace the automatic shortcut with one of your own, either from the Preferences or directly from the drop-down menu. At that point, the PIN switches from "automatic" to "custom" and frees up its number for the next one.
• The modifier is yours. In Preferences → General, choose which modifier key to use for automatic assignment (⌃ ⌥ ⇧ ⌘, even in combination): changing it instantly updates all the shortcuts already assigned.
• Zero conflicts. The system doesn't allow two PINs with the same combination, nor a combination already used by Quick Paste—a duplicate attempt is rejected with a beep, not with silent and ambiguous behavior.
• A little reminder badge. Each pin with a shortcut displays its combination next to the text, both in the menu and in Quick Paste, so you don't have to memorize it.
• A silent confirmation. When you use a shortcut, the icon in the menu bar flashes with a checkmark: you know the copy was successful without anything opening on the screen.

A mouse-over preview

The second new feature is smaller, but it solves a real annoyance: when a copied item is long, the list displays it truncated to one line. Now, simply hover your mouse over the item to see a tooltip with the full text, just as it was copied—including line breaks, not compressed like in the preview. It only appears when really needed, that is, when the text has actually been truncated: short items remain exactly as they were before.

The rest under the hood

Along with these two, several minor refinements have arrived: the menu now always reopens upon the first click on the icon in the tray (before, in some cases, a second click was needed), the hand cursor appears when hovering over clickable items, and the welcome screen finally shows the app's actual icon instead of a generic one.

Update and test

If you already use Clip&Pin, update from the App Store: the new shortcuts are ready to use on the pins you already have.

Keyboard shortcuts for pinned items

You can now assign any pinned item a global shortcut that copies it to the clipboard from anywhere on your system, without having to open the menu.

• Auto-pinning : When you pin a new item, it is immediately assigned a shortcut — a configurable modifier (default ⌘) plus a digit from 0 to 9, up to a maximum of 10 auto-pins.
• Customizable modifier : In Preferences → General, you can change the modifier used for automatic assignment (⌃ ⌥ ⇧ ⌘, even in combination). Changing it instantly updates all the automatic shortcuts already assigned.
• Manual reassignment : You can set a custom shortcut on any pin, either from Preferences → Clipboard Management or directly from the drop-down menu. Setting one manually converts the pin from "automatic" to "custom" and frees up the number slot for the next pin.
• Slot recycling : If you free up an auto-slot (by pinning the item or assigning it a custom shortcut), that number will become available again for the next pin.
• Over 10 automatic PINs : Once you exceed this limit, new PINs will remain without a shortcut until you manually assign one.
• No duplicates : The system prevents assigning the same combination to multiple items (or to the Quick Paste shortcut) — a duplicate attempt is rejected with a beep.
• Sorting : In the list, pins with automatic shortcuts come first (in digit order), followed by the others.
• Visual reminder : Each pin with a shortcut displays a small badge with the combination, both in the drop-down menu and in Quick Paste.
• Silent confirmation : When you use a pin shortcut, the icon in the menu bar briefly flashes with a checkmark, to confirm that the copy has taken place.

Mouseover preview for truncated content

List items whose contents do not fit on one line now display a tooltip with the full text on mouseover. This only appears when the text has actually been truncated, and displays the original contents of the copy (not the single-line preview with compressed line breaks).

Corrections

• The menu no longer reopened on the first click : after selecting an item, the icon in the menu bar would remain "stuck" and a second click would be required to reopen the menu. This was resolved by switching to SwiftUI's native closing mechanism instead of closing the window manually.
• Missing hand cursor : Hovering over clickable menu items now displays the hand cursor, as expected from an interactive list.
• "Preferences..." did not close the menu : Clicking the "Preferences..." item in the footer now correctly closes the drop-down menu before opening the settings window.
• The shortcut recorder was stuck : if you started recording a new shortcut and closed the menu before completing it, upon reopening the field would remain stuck waiting for a keystroke. It now resets correctly.
• The list used to "breathe" when pinning/spinning : the row height would change by a few pixels depending on whether an item had a visible shortcut or not, causing the list to jitter slightly. Row height is now fixed.
• Always visible trash can : the icon for deleting an item no longer appears only when you hover over it, but is always visible.
• Less invasive shortcut badge : The box for setting a shortcut in the drop-down menu has been made smaller and less cluttered than in the initial version.
• Wrong icon on the welcome screen : A generic icon was displayed instead of the app icon. The screen now displays the actual Clip&Pin icon.

Added missing translations (Italian, English, German, Spanish, French, Portuguese) for the new labels introduced with the automatic shortcuts feature.
